Chinese New Year is the festival with the longest chronological record in history, dating from 600 BC. To date, it has been celebrated for the last 2600 years. It was started by Emperor Shih Huang Ti when he introduced the first cycle of the zodiac. A complete cycle takes 60 years whereby each year is represented by a different animal. There are 12 different animal signs namely the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

Being the most important traditional festival, Chinese New Year is celebrated with much gaiety and splendor in many countries with large populations of ethnic Chinese for example in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. In mainland China, each Lunar New Year marks the biggest annual migration of workers (on earth) as they rush from the cities to their hometowns, to celebrate this joyous occasion with their loved ones, relatives and friends.
